AIM: To study ocular toxicity in Calotropis latex instillation
METHOD: Prospective study of 36 patients(M:F=5:4) who presented to OPD with accidental instillation of latex of Calotropis between Sept 2016- Apr 2017. Symptom & BCVA recorded, IOP, Fl staining, slit lamp examination done. Pts followed up for 3 months.
RESULTS: Blurring of vision, watering, redness, burning sensation were main symptoms.BCVA 6/9-6/24,conjunctival congestion(100%),corneal edema(33%), epithelial defect (27%),aqueous flare(2.7%), raised IOP(5.5%). After treatment with topical steroid, antibiotic, hypertonic saline, tear substitutes, cycloplegics, timolol(selected cases) 92% cases improved with BCVA 6/6 & clear cornea in 14 days. Rest cases showed a low endothelial cell count compared to normal fellow eye.
CONCLUSION:As Calotropis is a common flower used for worship in our locality, accidental inoculation is quite common. Awareness & prompt treatment can reverse morbidity .
