Purpose: To describe the demography, clinical features, management and outcome of patients of PUK.
Methods: Prospective study of cases presenting to the OPD from July 2016 to May 2017 at a tertiary eye center.
Results: 42 eyes of 24 patients with PUK were studied. The mean age of the patients was 59.87(35-82)years out of which 54.2% were women. 75% of the cases were bilateral. The most common etiology was Mooren’s ulcer(n=8, 33.3%) followed by Rheumatoid Arthritis(n=7, 25%). Other causes being systemic sclerosis(n=3,12.5%), Sjogrens syndrome(n=2,8.33%) and anemia(n=2, 8.33%). 20 eyes were associated with level IV dry eye. All cases were managed conservatively with oral steroids and immunosuppressants except two eyes (4%) who required lamellar keratoplasty.
Conclusion: Most cases of PUK can be managed conservatively with oral as well as topical steroids. Only in severe thinning cases, surgical intervention in the form of patch graft may be required.
