Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a growing public health problem across globe. In India, the prevalence of DM has increased significantly by 72.3%. The study is aimed to relate the educational status and Diabetes status among slum community.
Methodology: It is an ongoing population based study in slums of 18 wards of Mumbai. Blood sugar test performed during screening by community health workers.
Result: 16398 individuals were screened in 18 wards of Mumbai in door to door awareness program. During screening, 189 cases of DM were newly diagnosed as they were unaware of their disease status. Among the newly diagnosed diabetes in slums, majority 63.4% were literate and only around one third (36.6%) were illiterate.
Conclusion: Despite better educational status, slum dwellers were less aware about their Diabetes status and prevention of its complication. Hence, there is an urgent need to create awareness among slum communities to prevent complications of Diabetes.
