This is a prospective study of 18 children (33 eyes) with known congenital rubella syndrome. All children had heart disease, hearing problems and developmental delay.15 cases were bilateral and 3 cases were unilateral. Total cataract was most common followed by nuclear, lamellar and posterior subcapsular cataract. Associated ocular features included microphthalmos, microcornea, salt and pepper retinopathy, nystagmus and squint.31 eyes underwent lens aspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy of which1 eye had a primary intraocular lens implantation and 4 eyes had secondary intraocular lens implantation.3 eyes underwent membranectomy for visual axis opacification (VAO).The earliest age at surgery was 4 weeks of age. Postoperative complications were corneal edema, capsular phimosis, VAO, secondary glaucoma and postoperative fibrinous uveitis. 20 eyes had a follow-up of more than 1year of which 14 eyes attained a postoperative BCVA between 20/200 and 20/94.
