Purpose: To compare changes in corneal endothelium using specular microscopy in patients who had mature cataracts and underwent phacoemulsification with the use of Aurocoat plus with patients who underwent surgery using Viscoat.
Materials and Methods: The study comprised of 30 patients in 2 groups each , all having mature cataracts , and they received the Aurocoat Plus or Viscoat viscoelastic during the surgery in order to coat the anterior chamber. Preoperatively and post operatively at 1 week and at 4 weeks, patients underwent specular microscopy to see the changes in the endothelium of cornea.
Results: The mean endothelium loss was 318.7±446.5 after 1 week of surgery in group A. The mean endothelium loss after 4 weeks was 311±389.1 after surgery. The average cumulative dissipated energy was 10.8± 4.5 mJ. The average fluid used in group A 86.6±30.6 ml.
Conclusion: Aurocoat Plus viscoelastic is a safe viscoelastic to use in the patients who have mature cataracts.
