Purpose : to measure visual acuity outcome and assess complications in children presenting with unilateral traumatic cataracts
Methods:Retrospective review of 27 children (less than 18 years of age) with unilateral traumatic cataract managed by single surgeon from 2011 to 2016.
Results: Stone pelting and pencil injuries were most common accounting for 29.6%. Average age of presentation was 8.14 years. Male:Female= 3.5:1. Right eye was most commonly affected. Mean Preoperative VA was 1. Mean Postoperative VA was 0.28. At final follow up VA was 0.16 . Mean age at follow up was 10 years. Postoperative complications like – strabismus-22%, secondary glaucoma-11%, RD-7.4%, choroidal rupture-7.4%.
Conclusion: Cataract after blunt ocular trauma occurs in the pediatric population commonly and typically presents early after the injury.Children with visually significant traumatic cataracts can have good outcomes if they are managed aggressively and appropriately on time.
