Ocular trauma leads to 50% of all eye casualties.Knowledge of prognostic factors helps in deciding the line of management and rehabilitation for patients.This study was done between 2013 and 2015 in a rural hospital of central India.Detailed demographic data,initial visual acuity(VA),zone of injury,type of injury,clinical findings,OTS score and final post-operative VA at 6 months were analysed.There were 42 cases of open globe injury.Mean age:24.19 ± 18.61 years. 64% had Zone I,23% had Zone II and 11% had zone III injury. Pre-operative VA was ≤ LP/HM in 31(73.80%) cases. Final VA after 6 months remained ≤ LP/HM in 24 (57.14%) eyes. On Univariate analysis, poor prognostic factors were presence of poor presenting VA (p=0.0004),infection(p=0.008), visual axis involvement(p=0.019),hyphaema (p=0.032) and retinal detachment(p=0.029). The prognostic factors influencing final visual outcome in open globe injury are initial VA, visual axis involvement,infection, hyphaema and retinal detachment.
