PURPOSE:
To report a rare case of ocular rhinosporidiosis presenting as a polypoid conjunctival mass in a young adult.
METHOD:
A 36 year old male presented with a painless, non-progressive swelling in his left lower eyelid since 6 months.
Examination revealed a polypoidal, vascular, pedunculated mass measuring around 4x7mm arising from the lower palpebral conjunctiva of the left eye. Rest of the ocular examination was normal.
The lesion was excised under local anaesthesia by snipping the pedicel and the specimen was submitted for KOH mount and HistoPathological Examination(HPE).
RESULT:
HPE confirmed the unique infectious etiology of the lesion. Following excision of the mass, the conjunctiva healed completely with mild overlying scarring. At 6 weeks follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION:
Rhinosporidiosis is an ocular disorder with high recurrence rates and hence a complete meticulous excision with cauterization of the lesion is necessary.
