Purpose-To evaluate the efficacy of oral supplementation of vitamin D3 in perimenopausal women with dry eye syndrome over conventional treatment.
Methods-32 perimenopausal women in age grp of 45-55 presenting with dry eye syndrome were assessed from June 2016 to Mar 2017 prospectively & randomized into 2 grps of 16 each.Group A was treated with topical carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) in both eyes QID and group B received wkly oral vitamin D3 60,000 IU in addition to CMC for 6 wks.Patients were evaluated for schirmers test,TBUT,fluorescein corneal staining score(FCS score) & OSDI at the beginning & at 2,4 and 6wks.
Result-Significant increase in mean schirmer test values,TBUT(paired t test,p <0.05) & improvement in FCS score and OSDI is seen in Group B.Group B showed more significant change in parameters compared to group A. Conclusion-Oral vitamin D3 in wkly doses is seen to improve symptoms and signs of dry eye syndrome in perimenopausal women and adds to the effect of artificial tears.
