India has 6.7 million blind people due to corneal causes. With a steadily rising eye donation of roughly 50 thousand eyes per year, the utilization rate still stands at only 46%. While donor kin motivation and Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP ) can help get more eye donations, focusing on proper tissue processing and evaluation plays a crucial role in optimal utilization. It is time to reexamine the way we look at eye banking and use the available resources to the maximum. Eye bank tissue is often examined and handled by residents or technicians inexperienced in nuances of such work. This video demonstrates in detail the donor tissue evaluation, grading and proper allocation of screened tissue to appropriate recipient, highlighting the common dilemmas and mistakes.
