Stand-alone eye hospital with a decent capacity, even at the heart of the rural arena does not assure sustainability. By virtue of our own experience, there need to be a strategy to achieve that. It is essential to make the presence felt permanently in the community. Need assessment of avoidable blindness to be done through proper survey and research. It is also vital to generate need through awareness and social marketing within the community. Consistent satisfactory outcome with regards to clinical and service quality, safety, standard comprehensive eye care along with rehabilitation facility seem very useful in branding the system. Advocacy at different administrative levels and collaboration with national and international agencies are also very effective. Capacity building through strengthening of workforce through teaching and mentoring is another very important step. Priority of fund raising through promotion can never be an overstatement.
