This study aims at seeing the effects of amniotic membrane graft on 1. Corneal re-epithelisation and 2. Limbal Ischaemia after alkali injury. A 21 year old Male patient presented with accidental injury with caustic soda, while working in a sugar factory. He came with a vision of FC 2m’.
Immediate rinsing of the eye was done, followed by topical medication. Total erosion of corneal epithelium and 3 quadrant limbal ischaemia was present on Day 0.
Amniotic membrane graft was placed on the cornea within the first week, and topical medication continued.
Corneal epithelial regrowth and limbal ischaemia resolution was observed over time.
Corneal epithelisation and limbal ischaemia recovered fully in 4 weeks. BCVA improved to 6/24P, however, mild corneal conjunctivalisation and vascularisation noted during the 5th week.
In conclusion, Amniotic membrane grafting is an effective method of managing alkali corneal burns. However, it must be placed in conjunction to topical medication.
