Performance of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) involved in a Primary Eye Care (PEC) program for urban vulnerable population, was evaluated using a knowledge assessment questionnaire and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).
Knowledge score of ASHAs enhanced significantly (p-value<0.001) from 20±6.25 pre-training to 40.12±6.51 post-training. No barriers towards community awareness activities were reported. Vision screening by ASHAs had low acceptance due to cultural barriers. Majority ASHAs reported referring and accompanying community members to PEC clinics but many were hesitant in accompanying them to base hospital due to time needed and travel costs. ASHAs also felt demotivated due to delays and extensive documentation procedures needed for incentive disbursement. They all agreed that involvement in eye care improved their social standing. ASHAs can be effectively involved in many aspects of PEC. Their contribution can improve by overcoming identified challenges.
