AIM-To evaluate the clinical features of dry eye in Thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO).
METHODS- 42 eyes of 22 patients with TAO, and 80 eyes of 40 patients without TAO were included in this prospective study. The Schirmer test 1 and Mucus fern test (MFT) were assessed. Results were then compared between the patients with TAO ( group 1) and without TAO (group 2). Period of study was 1 year.
RESULT- The mean Schirmer test score was 13.4+/-7.32 mm and 23.9+/-4.57 mm in patients with TAO (group 1) and without TAO (group 2) respectively (p<0.05). Abnormal mucus fern pattern (type 3 and 4) was observed in 10 (44.6%) out of 22 patients of with TAO (group 1) and 2 (5%) out of 40 patients without TAO (group 2) (p<0.05) The mean proptosis did not show any difference between with TAO (group 1) and without TAO (group 2) (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION- Dry eye is common in patients with Thyroid associated ophthalmopathy.
