PP481 : Topical ophthalmic medications- A comparative economic analysis

To study variations amongst various brands of topical medications,a comparative study was done using available preparations of Moxifloxacin,Timolol,Latanoprost &Travoprost.Fill volume & number of drops in the bottle were measured & number of drop per ml determined. The yearly cost of medication was calculated for timolol, latanoprost &travoprost.The only preparation available amongst the studied drugs by generic chemical name was timolol.Though the cost of medication varied significantly between generic and branded preparations, the preservatives and vehicles used differed.Compliance in treating patients specially with glaucoma is a well-known problem.Any additional hurdle to patients taking their medication needs to be weighed considering not only the affordability but also tolerability.Writing chemical names of drugs as is being directed, will leave the discretion of dispensing the brand on the chemist leaving a big question mark on the fulfilment of the objective of the directive
