AIM
To study fundus findings in children with cerebral malaria and correlating with disease severity and prognostic outcome.
MATERIALS & METHODS
A prospective study was conducted in RIO eastern odisha from10.6.2016-10.5.2017 taking140 pts 6- 14yrs old with cerebral malaria. Detail clinical & ophthalmological evaluation including direct & indirect opthalmoscopies done. Fundus photographs taken
RESULTS
Out of 140pts,54(35.5%) had retinal haemorrhages,36(25.7%) retinal whitening,28(20%) papilloedema,16 multiple Roths spots,8pts had both cotton wool spots & retinal haemorrhages while 12 (8.57%) had extramacular retinal edema.
Among140 pts 75 died of which 60 had retinopathy. Survivors with retinopathy had longer coma resolution time(median56-57 hrs) than without retinopathy (median24-28 hrs).Of 75 pts who died 3 had septicaemia out of which2 had papilloedema.
CONCLUSION
This study shows that fundus changes in cerebral malaria are significantly associated with poor prognostic outcome .
