Age-related macular degeneration is a common cause of irreversible vision loss among the elderly. As there is no effective treatment, identifying modifiable risk factors is of great importance for prevention. This study evaluated the association between AMD with smoking, tobacco and alcohol consumption.
A case control study was conducted. Data were collected using a semi structured form. History of duration & amount of smoking, alcohol & tobacco consumption was noted. Complete ophthalmological examination was done. AMD was graded using AREDS classification. 98 cases were compared with 90 controls.
Late AMD was significantly associated with tobacco chewing (OR=3.8, P=0.005). Late AMD was not significantly associated with smoking (OR=2.17) & alcohol consumption (OR=1.39). Association of early AMD with alcohol (OR=1.82), smoking (OR=0.64) and tobacco (OR=0.98) was also not found significantly raised. In this study tobacco consumption was the only factor which associated with late AMD.
