PURPOSE: To compare outcomes between extended Range of Vision (ERV) IOL and Laser Blended Vision (LBV) for presbyopia.
METHOD: Prospective comparative study of the 50 patients in 45-60year age divided in 2 groups, 25 presbyopes who underwent bilateral cataract extraction with ERV IOL implantation vs 25 presbyopes who underwent LBV. A myopia of -1 to -1.5 D in the non-dominant eye was targeted. Follow-up was upto 12 months.
RESULTS: Post-operative uncorrected binocular visual acuity for distance at last follow up was 6/6 or better in 100% patients in both groups. Uncorrected near vision acuity was N6 or better in 96% in ERV group and 100% in LBV, while intermediate visual acuity at 60cm is better in ERV. LBV range of defocus is 0.47D more than ERV (mean 3.23D for LBV vs 2.76D for ERV). Both showed good contrast sensitivity with no significant difference.
CONCLUSIONS: ERV IOLs and LBV, both give excellent and comparable refractive outcome for presbyopia.
