Refractive accommodative esotropia comprises of esotropia with hypermetropic refractive error. The patient improves with glasses due to relaxation of accommodation and convergence. Treatment has generally emphasized correction of refractive error by optical techniques. We did a study to see the effect of LASIK for treatment of hyperopia and its effect on esotropia.
A total of 10 patients were included in the study. All patients underwent cycloplegic refraction and prescription of glasses and were reassessed. The mean age was 23.1 +/-2.3 years. The mean preoperative hyperopia in right eye and left eye was 2.6 +/- 1.4 and 3.4 +/- 1 D. The mean preoperative angle with target without glasses for near was 20.1 +/- 6.4 prism dioptre and with glasses 1.6 +/- 2.9 prism diopters and postoperatively the angle for near with target (4 weeks) was 2.2 +/- 2.2 prism diopters.
We conclude that both the angle & refractive error can be predictably treated with LASIK apart from the cosmesis.
