Diagnosis of CVI requires interaction, interview with the child’s parents and direct face-to-face patient examination to establish the cause for low functional vision. A standard, structured CVI range assessment form was used in this study to evaluate 200 referred children with CVI over 13 months.
The assessment in 3 groups, 0 to< 2 years (n=86), 2 to < 6 years (n= 77) and ≥ 6 years (n= 37) revealed that all 3 determinants of CVI scoring had an equivalent role in evaluation. Observation of visual behavior was more informative in comparing children < 2 years with those over 6 years (p value= 0.049), interviewing parents was more informative in assessing overall performance in children < 2 years when compared to those between 2 to 6 years (p value=0.002).
Direct examination had a significant edge in CVI evaluation of children over 2 years when compared to those over 6 years (P value =0.002). CVI range was 3.98± 2.78, 6.54± 3.60 and 9.27± 9.00 in three groups (p<0.005; all comparisons)
