Purpose: to study single surgery reattachment rate, refractive shift, cost and the complications involved in pneumoretinopexy (PR) as compared to scleral buckling (SB) in retinal detachments with superior breaks.
Method: Retinal detachment with superior breaks treated by either pneumoretinopexy (n=15) or scleral buckle (n=17) with a minimum follow up of 3 months were included in the study.
Results: Single surgery reattachment rate (p=1.000) final visual acuity (p=0.034) total surgical time to reattach retina with management of complications (p=0.0951) and surgical cost (p=0.4122) were comparable. Complications like cataract progression, glaucoma were analogous. The mean post operative refractive shift in spherical equivalents was 0D (range minus 1.5D – plus 1.25D) with PR and 1.63D (range minus 5.5D – plus 4.5D) with SB surgery.
Conclusion: Considering the unavoidable shift in refractive error with buckling surgery PR may be considered for retinal detachments with superior breaks.
