Dr.CHINTAN DESAI
Purpose: To report clinical profile of patients with Bilateral Acute retinal necrosis (BARN).
Method: A retrospective analysis of 17 patients (34 eyes) with BARN in a tertiary eye care centre.
Result: Mean age of patients 36 +/- 17.1 years with 10 males (58.82%). Mean latent period between onset in both eyes was 532 days (0 days to 8 years). Complete peripheral retina involved in 23 eyes (67.64%). Retinal detachment developed in 27 eyes (79.41%) in the course of the disease, of which 19 eyes needed surgical intervention. All patients received antiviral drugs with or without oral corticosteroids. Polymerase chain reaction identified HSV (5 patients) and VZV (7patients). Mean presenting and final BCVA (logMAR) was 2.24 and 2.28 respectively, with no statistically significant difference.
Conclusion: BARN is a rare but potentially severe vision threatening condition with poor visual prognosis and needs prompt diagnosis and urgent treatment.
