AIM: To study the distribution of refractive error type in urban children aged 5-15 years
METHOD: Cycloplegic refraction was performed on 150 urban children who presented to the outpatient department.
RESULTS: Symptomatology mainly included decreased distant vision and headache. Male children were more affected than females. The pattern of distribution of refractive error was predominantly compound hypermetropic astigmatism (50.3%) followed by compound myopic astigmatism(18.6%), mixed astigmatism(16.33%) and hypermetropia (6%).
CONCLUSION: Due to the increasing number of children diagnosed with refractive errors, predominantly of the astigmatic type, there is an urgent need to identify and correct them before the onset of amblyopia. Our study demonstrates the distribution of refractive error in urban children, who are nowadays exposed to increasing indoor activities and close range work.
