Aim:
To assess tear film parameters in children with allergic conjunctivitis and healthy control subjects.
Materials and methods:
Two groups of children (aged 10 to 18 years) comprising a study group (n = 30) with allergic conjunctivitis and a healthy control group (n = 30) underwent Schirmer’s 1 test (ST) and tear break up time (TBUT) tests.
Results:
Mean TBUT in study patients (6.25 ± 2.09 seconds) was significantly shorter than mean TBUT in controls (12.1 ± 2.14 seconds), (unpaired t test, P < 0.0001). However, mean ST in study group (16.12 ± 1.85mm) was not statistically different from mean ST in controls (16.26 ± 2.95 mm) Conclusion: Alteration in mucin layer possibly cause tear film instability and reduced TBUT in children with allergic conjunctivitis. Key words: allergic conjunctivitis, tear breakup time, mucin layer
