This study was conducted to report impact of having a child blind from retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) on families.
Caregivers of 18 children blind from ROP (age range: 4 months to 6 years, M: F = 1:1) were purposively selected for in-depth interview. The interviews were conducted in local language, recorded, transcribed and then translated into English. Themes and subthemes were generated from each interview and were analyzed using deductive and inductive approaches.
Themes that emerged from the interviews were- barrier of cost of treatment, impact on physical development, social exclusion, impoverishment, troubled interpersonal relationships and lack of access to rehabilitation services.
It is recommended to have established linkages between service providers for ROP and rehabilitation services.
