A prospective clinical pilot study was carried out on 40 eyes of 40 patients undergoing cataract surgery with more than 1 Diopter of preexisting corneal astigmatism. 20 eyes had toric IOL implantation and 20 eyes underwent paired 3.20 mm OCCIs on the steep axis with spherical IOL implantation. UVA & BCVA, refraction and toric IOL axis rotation were measured 3 months post-op.
Results- In the toric group, 90% of eyes achieved 6/9 or better UCVA and 65% achieved 6/6 vision. In OCCI group, 75% eyes achieved 6/9 or better UCVA and 40% achieved 6/6. 95% of eyes in both groups achieved 6/9 or better BCVA. Mean refractive cylinder decreased significantly from pre-op to post-op (2.22+/- 0.47D to 0.27+/- 0.39D in toric gp & 1.57+/- 0.50D to 0.46+/- 0.41D in OCCI gp).
Conclusion- Toric IOL implantation achieved an enhanced effect over OCCIs in treating pre existing astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery. No significant toric IOL axis rotation was noted in any eye.
