Purpose – To analyse the biochemical composition of orbital cystic fluid in congenital cystic eyes with anophthalmos/ microphthalmos.
Methods – Retrospective analysis of biochemical composition of orbital cyst fluid of 4 patients with congenital anophthalmos/microphthalmos over 1 year period was done and compared with normal plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Results – The mean age at presentation was 4.4 years (range 2 months- 13 years). The mean concentration of sodium (134.75mmol/L) and potassium(3.85mmol/L) in cyst fluid was similar to both CSF and plasma. Mean concentration of calcium (7.67 mg/dL) was higher while that of bicarbonate (19.3mmol/L) and phosphorus(4.5mg/dL) was lower than CSF . Mean Chloride concentration (108 mg/dL)was higher than plasma (102.5mmol/L) but not as high as found in CSF(122mmol/L).
Conclusion – The biochemical composition of orbital cystic fluid in anophthalmic /microphthalmic eyes more closely resembles those which are found in plasma.
