The aim is to study prospectively the operative complications and visual acuity for posterior polar cataract(PPC).Best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) was recorded at the end of 1, 3 and 6 months post-operatively.Out of the 140 eyes,14 eyes (10%) had posterior capsular rupture(PCR).Phacoemulsification had a complication rate of 4.34%.Small Incision Cataract Surgery(SICS) had a complication rate of 15.49%.Out of the 14 intraoperative complications, 4 occurred in size of 3X3 mm, 3 in size of 4X4 mm, 6 in size of 4X3 mm and 1 in size of 3X2 mm.In patients aged >50 years, 9 out of 106 eyes(8.5 %) had PCR whereas 5 out of 34(14.7%) had in patients aged <50 years. When 6 month post operative mean BCVA was compared between phacoemulsification and SICS groups, the phacoemulsification group had a better outcome(p<0.001).Phacoemusification has less chances of PCR with better visual outcome,as compared to SICS.PCR was more common in eyes with larger size of PPC and in patients aged <50 years.
