50 eyes of 50 patients who were to undergo phacoemulsification were randomly divided into two groups of 25 each. During the procedure we used 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as a viscoelastic agent in one group and 1.4% Sodium hyaluronate in other group. Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP), Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) were measured for all 50 cases preoperatively and post operatively on day 1, day 7 and day 24Outcome was measured in terms of Post operative rise in IOP, Post operative rise in CCT and BCVA. T-test analysis was done for each of the three variables and levels of significance were depicted in terms of p-value. The post operative BCVA apparently does not depend upon the viscoelastic agent used. 2% HPMC causes a spike in post operative IOP as compared to 1.4% NaH which is statistically significant. 1.4% NaH causes an increase in post operative CCT as compared to 2% HPMC which is also not statistically significant.
