Introduction:Cataract surgery is a very cost-effective procedure. But complications can lead to varied implications.
Purpose:To evaluate factors leading to delayed discharge and cost impact of complications.
Methodology:Retrospective analysis (Jan2015-Dec2016).
Results: 68 patients with mean age 64.9 years were evaluated. Significant improvement was noted (p=0.000) between preop UCVA (mean±SD=1.86±0.11) and POD 1 day UCVA (mean±SD=1.09±0.09). Most common cause of delayed discharge was postop Iritis with secondary glaucoma(25%) followed by raised IOP(19.76%). Most common intraop complication was whole bag removal(28.5%) followed by PCR(23%). Out of 14 resurgeries, IOL redialling(50%) was most common.Average extra stay was 1.2days.Average cost of drops, systemic medication, resurgery and extra stay was Rs. 197/-, 51/-, 890+/-2042 and 405+/-264 respectively.
Conclusion:Pre-op IOP, UCVA and BCVA were the only factors which had significant but negative correlation with total extra cost.
