30 eyes of 30 patients were included in study to evaluate the effect of 3.2 mm, clear corneal incision at the pre-marked steep meridian, in patients having 1.0 D to 1.5 D corneal astigmatism, undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Patients were grouped into superior (S), supero-temporal (ST), temporal group (T), according to location of surgical incision and were reassessed post-operatively at week 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 for astigmatism by using automated keratometry and SIA. Primary outcome measures studied were change in the preoperative astigmatism and surgically induced astigmatism.
Mean changes in amount of astigmatism (correction) in S, ST &T group were 0.38D, 0.56D and 0.25D respectively and SIA was 0.85@75.72, 0.81@137.7, and 0.70@76.80 respectively. SIA was maximum in S group followed by ST group and least in T group.
A, 3.2 mm corneal incision in steep meridian can be used to modify pre-existing astigmatism in cataract patients.
