Currently many ophthalmologists are perforce, practising ‘defensive ophthalmology’ – thanks to the spate of violence and legal action, as well as media slur against doctors. A key to safe practice in these times is
effective doctor-patient communication, which is not addressed adequately in medical training in India. This instruction course brings together speakers with different styles, but all excelling in communication and rapport building with patients. The speakers are all leaders – heading speciality services, private practice or an institute. They speak on key components of communication.The panel discussion includes audience interaction – we present typical case scenarios and how to deal with each. At the end of the IC, the participants will have the tools to improve their patient communication; and proceed to do just what they wished to do on entering the medical profession – concentrate on helping the patient get better.
