Purpose:To investigate the clinical manifestations and various diagnoses of optic disc swelling.
Methods:40 patients presenting with optic disc swelling at the initial visit were studied.Detailed history was taken.Fundus examination and photography were conducted.Supportive examinations such as visual field, color-vision and imaging tests, were performed as per the need. Systemic investigations and imaging were performed accordingly.
Results:Optic neuritis and papilloedema were the most commonly diagnosed conditions(20%).6 out of 40 patients had grade 4 hypertensive retinopathy(15%).Other conditions causing disc edema were anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, chorioretinitis, toxic optic neuropathy, pseudopapillitis and pseudotumor cerebri.
Conclusions:Differential diagnosis when patients with optic disc swelling present to the neuro-ophthalmology clinic are many.Detailed clinical history,examination,investigations and follow up are critical for the accurate diagnosis and management.
