Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of combined cataract and trabeculectomy surgery by fellows at a tertiary eye care centre.
Methods: A retrospective study of patients with primary open angle glaucoma, primary angle closure glaucoma and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma who underwent combined cataract and trabeculectomy surgery performed by fellows between January and December 2015.
Results: 282 patients were included with a mean age of 67.95 years. The mean intraocular pressure ± SD reduced from 21.08 ±6.78 mmHg to 15.27±4.79 mm Hg at end of 1 year P = 0.001. The mean number of anti glaucoma medications reduced from 1.00±0.97 to 0.37±0.66 P = 0.001 and mean best corrected visual acuity improved from 6/36 to 6/12 at 1 year P value =0.001. The percentage of success was 92% at 1 year. 4 eyes failed during the follow up period.
Conclusion: Combined trabeculectomy with cataract extraction performed by fellows has a good success rate with satisfactory IOP control and vision restoration.
