Purpose:To determine safety and efficacy of polyglactin and nylon suture vs nylon sutures for triangular scleral flap in phacotrabeculectomy.
Method:A randomized controlled study of patients (40 each) with glaucoma who underwent phacotrabeculectomy from January to December 2015. Group1 underwent scleral flap suturing with two fixed 10-0 vicryl and one fixed 10-0 nylon suture while Group2 underwent flap suturing with two 10-0 nylon and one releasable suture.
Results:Mean IOP decreased from 16.6±3 mmHg to 14.2±3 in group1 and 16.4±4.1 mmHg to 13.9±2.8 in group2 at 1 year.Number of glaucoma medications reduced from 1.45±0.6 (group1) and 1.7±0.8 (group2) to nil medications postoperatively.Laser suturolysis was done in 12eyes in group1 and 26eyes in group2.Mean waiting time in the clinic was 35±8 minutes in group1 and 75±18 minutes in group2.
Conclusion:Polyglactin suture are as safe and effective as nylon suture for IOP control and need lesser intervention, hence reducing follow up visits.
