Performing safe and effective regional anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery is an important skill for ophthalmologists. Regional blocks provide good analgesia and akinesia with minimal use of drug. A systematic approach to local anesthesia will consistently provide effective anesthesia and a high level of patient acceptance, thus avoiding the risks associated with general anesthesia. With regional blocks, general anesthesia can be avoided even for complex eyelid and orbital surgery. With the sound knowledge of the technique of regional blocks and anatomy the surgeon can minimize the surgical turnover time, improve operating theater efficacy and also improve intra-op comfort of the patient. In this video we demonstrate the various techniques of regional ophthalmic anesthesia using graphics and video clippings. The relevant orbital anatomy is described along with the techniques. The commonly used anesthetic drugs and adjuvants used and the possible complications are also described.
