Age related macular degeneration is a major cause of blindness in developed countries and increasingly so in Asian countries. We aimed to study the clinical profile of patients of AMD reporting to a tertiary health care centre.
This cross sectional study included patients above 50 years of age with diagnosed AMD. A detailed history including data on demographic, socioeconomic, and ocular history was obtained. Complete ophthalmological examination was done. AMD was graded using AREDS classification.
96eyes of 58 AMD patients were included in the study. Of 96 eyes, 55.32% had early AMD, 28.73% had intermediate AMD and 15.95 % had advanced AMD, 83.3% had drusens, 25% had RPE atrophy, 14.5% had geographical atrophy and 5.2% had neovascular AMD. Mean age was 72.03+9.80 yrs, 58.62% were males, 62.06% belonged to rural population and 53.44% to outdoor occupation. We concluded that AMD is common in elderly males involved in outdoor occupation with early AMD most frequent presentation.
