Background- The impact of obesity on overall health is well known, but there are conflicting reports regarding the relationship of BMI & IOP. So there is a need to evaluate these contradicting findings.
Aim- To investigate relationship between BMI & IOP in age defined population in Central India.
Method- A cross-sectional study in which 1000 apparently healthy individuals were included.Patient particulars including age, sex, height, weight & IOP was recorded. Height was measured with wall-mounted tape and weight with bathroom scale. IOP was measured with non-contact tonometer. BMI was calculated as Weight/Height^2 (kg/m2).
Results- BMI is significantly correlated with IOP (p<0.05), & it has a notably higher value in obese people. IOP is almost same in males & females of all age groups. Conclusion- To maintain levels of IOP within normal limits & for prevention of glaucoma, BMI should be maintained and simple lifestyle changes can help in achieving this goal.
