Diabetes and hypertension are well entwined conditions. Coexisting hypertension, by virtue of vascular changes, exacerbate the complications of diabetes.
In this study we compared the incidence of ocular morbidity of diabetes in hypertensive & non hypertensive.
Out of 545 patients enrolled, 214 patients were hypertensive & 331 were non-hypertensive. Most common anterior segment complications were cataract (41%), diminished corneal sensation (28%), meibomitis (25%), dry eye (19%) & glaucoma (7%) of cases. Common posterior segment complications were DR (38.53%), vascular occlusions (4%), NAION (1.4%) & diabetic papillopathy (0.5%). On comparing the incidence of ocular morbidities, we found that vascular complications were more common in hypertensive patients {DR (41.5% VS 36.5%), RVO (5.6% VS 3.02%), NAION (2.3% VS 0.9%), DP (0.9% VS 0.3%)} while cataract (37.8% VS 42.9%), infectious diseases (43.4% VS 53.47%) & dry eye (16.3% VS 20.5%) were more common in hypertensive patients.
