Aim: To study the corneal immune response in fungal keratitis in terms of neutrophil gradient along the cornea from limbus to the exudate .
Study design: One cornea with fungal keratitis was collected from a patient undergoing therapeutic keratoplasty. This cornea was sent to the pathology laboratory for dissection, staining and evaluation for the gradient of neutrophils from the area of exudate to limbus. It was sectioned into linear segments from one end to the other. These segments were placed on slides and processed to be later stained with haematoxylin and eosin. The stained segments were studied for the neutrophil density.
Result: It was found that the density of neutrophils was more closer to the exudate. The segments further away from it showed fewer neutrophils.
Conclusion: Fungal hyphae and tissue reaction to it attracts neutrophils around the exudate. The probable origin of these neutrophils is from the limbal vessels.
