Pediatric cataract surgery is a challenging procedure and needs a good posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy to prevent complications. In this prospective observational study we compared the visualization of posterior capsule during PPC and completeness of anterior vitrectromy (AV) in hands of a novice pediatric surgeon using microscope and oblique external illumination using endoilluminator.20 children with pediatric cataract underwent surgery with PPC+AV +/- IOL implantation. It was done by fellows by conventional technique using microscope light; using endoillumionator when visualization was difficult. All cases were assessed for size and regularity of PPC and completeness of AV by the expert surgeon.Of the 20 cases, endoilluminator was used in 17 cases(85%) at different stages of the cataract surgery. To conclude, for a young pediatric ophthalmologist, endoilluminator is a boon as it is inexpensive and easy to use that ensures completeness of procedure.
