Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness over the age of 55 yrs worldwide. Numerous risk factors have been reported but association is variable. We aimed to evaluate association of AMD with diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
This case control study was conducted in tertiary care hospital Demographic information and history of systemic diseases was noted. Blood pressure was measured and blood investigation was done for diabetes and dyslipidemia. AMD was graded using AREDS classification.
58cases (Mean age=72.03+9.80) were compared with 57 controls (Mean age=65.39+8.34). Late AMD was associated with diabetes (OR=1.2), hypertension (OR=2.08) and dyslipidemia (1.92)but association was not statistically significant. Similarly early AMD was associated with diabetes (OR=1.2) and dyslipidemia (OR=1.74) without any statistical significance. No significant association was found between diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and AMD
