AIM-To study ocular manifestation of c.p hair in eye
METHOD-prospective study of 18 patients(f:m=11:7) attended OPD between NOV 2016-JAN17 with c.p hair in eye. 14 gave h/o contact with caterpillar,4 gave h/o dust entry. Signs & symptoms noted,fl st , s/l exam done. Pts followed up for 1 month.
RESULT-Intense pain ,photophobia, foreign body sensations were presenting symptoms .Conj congestion, papillary reacn present in all, 6 had inflammatory nodular conjunctivitis, SPK in 4 and linear corneal abrasions in 16 pts .15 Pts had setae in tarsal conj,superficial cornea-4, stroma-1 and 1 pt had cp hair protruding into AC.
Removal of superficial setae done , some requiring repeated removal whenever the setae surfaced. Topial antibiotic,lubricants, cyclopegics & steroids(fl –ve) given. At 1 month,15 pts had BCVA 6/6 and clear cornea. corneal scar in 3 and infiltrate persisted in 1 patient.
CONCLUSION-C.P hairs can penetrate cornea &can cause significant ocular morbidity.
