BACKGROUND: In a Govt. hospital where around 2000 cataract surgeries are performed annually, an attempt was made to know effect on the quality of life (QoL) because of visual rehabilitation after cataract surgery.
METHODOLOGY: 500 cataract patients were studied. Cataract extraction with PCIOL implantation was done by small incision cataract surgery & phacoemulsification method. Pre and postoperative QoL was assessed by pretested & validated questionnaire analyzing social, mental & visual functions.
RESULTS: 99% patients have postop best corrected visual acuity >/= 6/12 which was not related to type of surgery performed. Preop social functions were 15.7 ± 1.9, mental functions were 14.9±1.7 & visual functions were 31.3±2.5. Postop social functions were 7.1±1.2, mental 7.6±0.9 & visual were 12.1±1.6, showing significant improvement in QoL in each age group.
CONCLUSION: Visual rehabilitation after cataract surgery has tremendous effect on social, mental & physical well being of patient.
