Purpose: To assess the effect of illumination levels on reading acuity & speed.
Methods: Phakic and pseudophakic with monofocal & multifocal IOLs with distance & near BCVA of 0.0logMAR were included. MNRead chart at 4 illumination levels was used to assess Reading acuity (RA) & critical print size (CPS) in logMAR and reading speed (RS) at CPS as words read per minute (wpm)
Results: 30 subjects were included. The mean±SD RA was 0.07±0.12, 0.05±0.13, 0.03±0.13, and 0.02±0.12 at illumination level 1,2,3 and 4 respectively. The mean±SD CPS was 0.42±0.23, 0.41±0.22, 0.35±0.22, and 0.37±0.22 logMAR at illumination level 1,2,3 and 4 respectively. The mean±SD reading speed was 137.47±28.39, 146.34±23.90, 155.06±34.54, and 150.59±25.45 wpm at illumination level 1,2,3 and 4 respectively.
After adjusting for age, a unit increase in illumination, increases RS by 0.07 words (0.01, 0.13).
Conclusion: Improvement in RA, CPS and RS was noted with increase in illumination
