Aim: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of different immunosuppressive agents in patients with non-infectious uveitis.
Methods: Records of patients with non-infectious uveitis treated with immunosuppressives were studied retrospectively over a period of 1 year. Primary outcomes were corticosteroid-sparing control of inflammation and improvement in visual acuity. Data collected and analysed using STATA 11.1
Results: 40 eyes of 25 patients with non-infectious uveitis (Vogt Koyanagi Harada syndrome-26, Behcet’s disease-5, Sarcoidosis–3, Pars Planitis–3, Sympathetic Ophthalmia–1) were treated with immunosuppressives. Methotrexate was the most commonly used immunosuppressive. There was a statistically significant (p=0.001) improvement in visual acuity and control of inflammation.
Conclusion: Immunosuppressive agents are effective in controlling inflammation, improving visual outcome and sparing corticosteroids, thereby reducing their adverse effects in non-infectious uveitis.
