Purpose-PVL results in a wide range of clinical presentations (spastic diaplegia, mental retardation, visual impairment, motility disorders) due to hypoxia. We report a series of 8 such patients.
Methods-8 patients born prematurely, presenting with strabismus and/or poor vision, with MRI findings corroborative of PVL were included in the study.Relevant history,VA,ocular motility and deviation were evaluated.Horizontal deviation was corrected surgically and results analysed 12week postop.
Results-Exotropia(XT) was more common than eso(ET),with deviation being incomitant in 3 patients. SPA was noted in 6,DVD in 3,LN in 4 patients. Bilateral large cups were seen in 3, 2 had optic nerve hypoplasia and 3 had only disc pallor. An undercorection was noted for XT and overcorrection for ET.
Discussion-PVL is commonly reported with prematurity.Ocular involvement is protean.Large cups may lead to a misdiagnosis of glaucoma.A high index of suspicion, neurological evaluation may lead to correct diagnosis.
