Macular Edema is one of the causes for suboptimal visual outcome after cataract surgery. OCT(Optical coherence tomography) is a noninvasive imaging technique that helps us detect minute changes in the thickness of retina especially the macula.
50 cases operated by the ECCE and 50 operated by the SICS technique were studied.
OCT was done 4 weeks post operatively.
Incidence of Macular Edema was 16% in ECCE as compared to 10% in SICS.
69% of the patients who had Macular edema had complicated (eventful) cataract surgery and 23% needed a second intervention.
31% patients who had Macular Edema underwent uneventful cataract surgeries of which 75% underwent SICS and 25% ECCE.
Macular Edema occurs after uneventful cataract surgeries too, though the incidence is much higher in patients who had eventful Cataract surgeries. In suspected cases the early detection with the help of OCT will help to initiate treatment early.
In terms of postop Macular Edema SICS proved to be a superior surgical option.
