We reviewed factors associated with graft survival in optical penetrating keratoplasty.
Methods: Review of 150 patient records, undergoing optical PK in one eye in a secondary eye care center from 01/01/08 – 31/12/13. 92 patients were unilaterally blind (Group A), 58 patients were bilaterally blind (Group B).
Results: Mean age was 50.58 ± 17.34 yrs in Group A, and 58.83 ± 13.8 yrs in B. 47 grafts (51%) in the A and 34 (58.62%) in B failed. Median survival of graft was 21 mths (A) & 20 mths (B). Leading cause of graft failure was rejection reaction, 24 (26.1%) in A & 22 (37.9%) in Group B. Vascularization (P =0.0001), age (P = 0.0066), Immunological rejection (P= 0.0001), graft infections (P=0.0078), postoperative glaucoma (P=0.0007) were identified as significant risk factors for graft failure. Type of surgery (p=0.0237) & other eye status (p=0.0138) also were risk factors for graft failure.
Conclusion: Specific factors are associated with graft failure in optical PK.
