Aim: To study the association of serum lipids with diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy.Materials and methods: The study included 100 diabetic retinopathy patients (68 males and 32 females) who attended eye OPD. Serum lipid profile was assayed using standard biochemical methods. Stage of diabetic retinopathy was done with ETDRS grading system. Type of maculopathy was assessed with fundus fluorescein angiography.Results: High Triglyceride levels, VLDL levels, Total cholesterol/HDL ratio and LDL/HDL ratio had correlation with progression of DR. High total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL levels and high LDL/HDL ratio were associated with diabetic maculopathy.High HDL levels had negative impact on diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy. High VLDL level was associated with worsening of vision in the follow-up.Conclusion: This study demonstrated statistically significant correlation of dyslipidemia with severity of diabetic retinopathy and progression to maculopathy and worsening of vision
